Anurag Kashyap is one of the most talented directors Bollywood has today and is known for his path-breaking contribution to Indian cinema. Born on September 10, 1972, the director, actor, producer, writer, and editor hails from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Anurag has won several accolades over the years for his films and is awarded four Filmfare Awards, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the Yash Bharti award for his filmmaking. Kashyap received his biggest break into Bollywood with 1998 film Satya directed by Ram Gopal Verma. The filmmaker arrived in the city with only Rs. 5000 in his pocket, and eventually ran out of money, finally managing to find work at Prithvi Theatre. Anurag Kashyap marked his Bollywood directorial debut with film Paanch, which never released due to censorship issues. Over the years, Kashyap has entertained his audiences with films Black Friday, Dev D, Gulaal, The Girl in Yellow Boots, Gangs Of Wasseypur, The Lunchbox, Shahid, Bombay Talkies, Raman Raghav, Mukkabaaz, and Manmarziyaan. The director also has directed popular Netflix original series Sacred Games and has directed a part of the US-based streaming platform’s original film Lust Stories. Other than filmmaking, Kashyap also serves NGO Angan and is the co-founder of Anurag Kashyap films and Phantom films production companies. No Smoking (2007) – The film is written and directed by Anurag Kashyap and co-produced by Vishal Bharadwaj and Kumar Mangat. No Smoking is a neo-noir psychological thriller and stars John Abraham, Ayesha Takia, Ranvir Shorey and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles.
Dev D (2009) – The Indian romantic film is the modern-day version of Devdas and is written and directed by Anurag Kashyap. Dev D is set in Punjab and Delhi and stars Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, Mahie Gill in lead roles. The film borough Kashyap in mainstream cinema.
Gulaal (2009) – Gulaal is a political drama film directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film is set in Rajasthan and is based on politics in a university and a fiction based secessionist movement consisting of former Rajput leaders who are elite.
Black Friday (2007) – Black Friday is based on the true events of 1993 Bombay Bombings. The film is written and directed by Anurag Kashyap himself and is a crime film. The film was made in 2004 but was never released until 2007 because of the sensitive topic it showcased.
Gangs Of Wasseypur (2012) – The film released in two parts and have been considered as one of the Anurag Kashyap’s best works. Gangs of Wasseypur features Manoj Bajpai, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi, Richa Chaddha and Tigmanshu Dhulia in lead roles. Both the parts were originally shot as one film but were cut down in parts as no theatre would screen a film of 319 minutes.
Bombay Velvet (2015) – The film was directed and co-produced by Anurag Kashyap and stars Bollywood biggies Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar in pivotal roles. Bombay Velvet is based on the book Mumbai Fables by historian Gyan Prakash. The film tanked miserably but the nuances of the film were highly appreciated.
Manmarziyaan (2018) – Manmariyaan features Abhishek Bachchan, Vicky Kaushal and Taapsee Pannu in lead roles and was one of Anurag Kashyap’s best love stories. The film is set in Amritsar and is based on a love triangle between the three stars.
